We recently finished fabricating and installing a custom set of access stairs for a pier on Mere Point in Brunswick, Maine. The stairs are new, but some of the material has been part of this property's waterfront for quite a while.
The homeowners' original pier was built by their father. When we replaced that pier, we were able to save some of its aluminum components for reuse. Rather than sending that material off as scrap, we incorporated it into a new set of stairs for the replacement pier.
Fabricating the stairs
Bradley built the stairs in our shop in Freeport, working with the salvaged aluminum to fabricate the frame. He welded the assembly together and added the treads and railings.
Building a custom set of stairs allows us to work with the specific geometry of a pier and its shoreline. In this case, the stairs provide a separate point of access from the pier down toward the water, alongside the main gangway connection.
Installation on Mere Point
With fabrication complete, we brought the stairs out to Mere Point and installed them on the new timber pier.
The finished structure includes a timber pier, aluminum gangway, and the newly fabricated access stairs. The stairs put the original aluminum back into service, this time as part of a new waterfront access system.
It's a small piece of the property's history carried forward into the new construction, and a good example of the kind of custom fabrication that goes into our projects.
We're glad to have these stairs installed while the November weather is still mild. Colder days are coming, and we're making the most of the remaining fall construction season.
